How Does The Regenokine Program For Osteoarthritis Work
Designed in Germany by Peter Wehling MD, Regenokine is an updated version of Orthokine. Essentially, it is a natural anti-inflammatory that has been shown in studies to reduce pain and increase mobility.
It’s also the go-to treatment for NFL players who need a safe, effective solution to their serious musculoskeletal injuries. It’s a process where anti-inflammatory factors are removed from your blood, manipulated and then injected back into the injury site.
Regenokine (or Orthokine in Europe) is a treatment for chronic pain and osteoarthritis based on your own body’s anti-inflammatory proteins and growth factors. It reduces inflammation which minimizes the damage caused by osteoarthritis to muscles, ligaments and tendons.
Also called Autologous Conditioned Serum (ACS), it uses your own blood that is drawn and then processed to increase the amount of anti-inflammatory proteins and growth factors it contains. It is then re-injected into your joint.
Unlike PRP therapy, which concentrates platelets, Regenokine does not contain stem cells and cannot regenerate your damaged tissue or heal your injury. However, it can block interleukin 1, a protein that causes inflammation and is a key factor in the progression of osteoarthritis. The process is similar to how your skin repairs itself if you cut it, creating a protective blood clot and stimulating new bone and muscle growth.
Regenokine is a procedure that injects beneficial proteins collected from your own blood into an injured joint. The treatment is a popular one in Europe, and pro athletes including Seattle Seahawks linebacker K.J Wright have flown to Germany to receive it.
During a Regenokine course, doctors take syringes full of your blood and pump it through tubes that heat it to what Wehling calls “a fever-like temperature.” That separates and concentrates the healing compounds in your blood. The resulting yellowish serum contains chemicals that fight inflammation and blocks interleukin-1, which is known to cause pain and arthritis.
The procedure is not approved in the United States, but Wehling has licensed several physicians who use it off-label at his practices in the US. It’s expensive—about $10,000 for a series of six injections in the first joint, and half that for subsequent joints. It’s not covered by insurance, though orthopedic surgeon Jana Timmerman says she hopes to bring the price down.
Inflammation is the body’s way of protecting injured tissues. But too much can cause pain and disability. The Regenokine program can reduce inflammation and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels, accelerating the repair process.
Regenokine is a rebranding of a German technology known as Orthokine. It uses a patient’s own blood to create IRAP, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory protein. It is an effective treatment for a wide range of orthopedic conditions including arthritis, degenerative spinal diseases, tendon injuries and other musculoskeletal problems.
The procedure involves removing some of the patient’s own blood and slightly heating it so that the white cells become active. Then the resulting serum is injected into the affected area. It is said to be effective for 75 percent of patients with osteoarthritis or other musculoskeletal disorders. It also works for athletes, including Kobe Bryant, Fred Couples and Alex Rodriguez. But many physicians who offer Regenokine have moved on to more effective Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments.
Regenokine is a treatment that uses protein-rich proteins harvested from your blood to help heal injured tissues. It’s a popular therapy that’s used to treat pain in the knees, back, elbows, and other joints. It’s similar to platelet-rich plasma (PRP) but is different in several ways.
The process involves taking a sample of your own blood and incubating it with zinc etched glass beads. This creates IRAP, a protein that’s believed to be an anti-inflammatory. It’s similar to PRP, but it doesn’t contain stem cells and is more focused on anti-inflammatory healing.
Many professional athletes use the treatment to improve their performance and reduce pain from injuries. Seattle Seahawks linebacker K.J Wright has been able to avoid surgery by getting the injections in his shoulder. The procedure has also helped golfer Jeev Milkha Singh, who said he was “pretty much pain free” after getting the treatment for his shoulders. In fact, he was able to return to competition a month after getting the shots.
